Welcome to our referencing website

The objective in producing this website is to provide all the information you need in order to produce accurate and correct citations and bibliographies in your submitted coursework.

Why bother?

The purpose of providing references in coursework is

  • To acknowledge the work of others, and avoid charges of plagiarism in your work.
  • To allow somebody reading your coursework to find the same source materials you did.
  • To establish that you have read up on your subject before writing your piece of work.
  • To show that your work is state-of-the-art, by referring to recent publications.

The different systems

Unfortunately, there isn't one standard system which everyone uses, and different departments (or even different sections within some departments) will use different systems. Your tutor will be able to explain which system they expect you to use. You can ignore anything to do with systems not used by your department.

Using this website

First, you need to select the system you have been asked to use, from the options along the top of the page. A replacement home page will appear, with a working side menu.

For each of the systems, there will be a menu down the left side of the page showing how to create citations and bibliographies in that system. Explore the side menu to use the resources.

The Glossary item explains what the terms mean, and the Examples item shows what a citation or bibliographic reference in this system actually looks like.
