Santa has some friendly advice for you.
HallNet is a wired service that lets you register your own computer, game console, smart TV and other devices, so you can connect to the Internet through the campus wired network.
The service only supports wired connections at the moment. Amazon Echo Dot and Google Home Mini CANNOT be used on HallNet until some time in summer 2018.
Some devices can be connected now by a USB adapter which is available separately: https://www.amazon.co.uk/UGREEN-Ethernet-Adatper-Chromecast-Network/dp/B01N1X28F1
We are looking at extending the service over the summer of 2018 to include wireless devices such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, Sonos Speakers, Now TV boxes and Amazon Fire TV Sticks.
Connecting wireless routers/access points that you have purchased into the University network will cause issues. This means frustration for both you and your neighbours in hall. The problem is that signals may be dropped and you and those around you will lose wireless connectivity.
More information is available at: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/services/it/student/hallnet/faq/
We hope that when you bring your new devices to campus you are able to enjoy them following the guidance above, until such time as the infrastructure can support more devices wirelessly.
