Software applications and online services

Following the global announcement of computer security issues in a program called Log4j, used worldwide across software applications and online services, IT Services have been working to secure impact on University services and systems. However, there are several threats that can potentially affect security on your computer.

How does this affect me?

If left unfixed, attackers can potentially break into systems, steal passwords and logins, extract data, and infect networks with malicious software.

Action required?

Devices on the University Staff desktop service with standard software will be updated automatically, therefore no further action is required.

If you have downloaded a version of IBM SPSS Statistics from the Software Download module on Learn and you are no longer using the software; we recommend that you uninstall that version (due to a computer security bug) and instead access the software via our Remote Desktop Service -

To ensure your device is protected, we recommend you keep your software up to date by applying regular updates issued by software vendors to ensure it is fully supported and protected from security vulnerabilities. Software such as Minecraft may require you to apply a manual update to maintain security.

Can I get more information and help?

If you need any support or guidance regarding your personal device, you can contact the IT Services Helpdesk. Please note this service is unavailable during the University closure days over Christmas.
